Collaboration between Bio4Pack and Argos Packaging for Paddy Straw trays
03-02-2025
Argos Packaging is now officially a partner of Bio4Pack and will exclusively sell their Paddy Straw trays in the Netherlands. Patrick Gerritsen, director of Bio4Pack, says: "After having conducted several discussions with multiple parties, we found Argos by far the best partner to increase the sales of the Paddy Straw trays. Argos is very active near growers and packers and has a more extensive sales apparatus than Bio4Pack."
The Paddy Straw packaging line is made from by-products of rice plantations. This material thus offers the necessary environmental benefits. The trays are made from rice straw, which is considered waste and would be burned. Avoiding this burning reduces the emission of harmful substances and significantly lowers CO2 emissions. Additionally, reducing waste burning helps improve air quality and protect groundwater levels, which is crucial for areas with limited water resources.
Social Benefits
In addition to the environmental gains, this packaging line also offers social benefits. "By providing rice farmers in Asia – particularly in Malaysia – with a new source of income and creating jobs in the transport and production sectors, we contribute to economic development and a better standard of living in the region. This makes our packaging a prime example of how sustainability can go hand in hand with social progress. I have worked in bioplastics for 25 years, and Paddy Straw is by far the most sustainable product we have. Together with Argos, we have the opportunity to expand this product much faster within the fresh produce industry," according to Patrick."Sustainability Supported by the Entire Organization"
He emphasizes that the way Argos is committed to sustainability was an important argument for entering into this collaboration. "I have known Miquel van den Ende, the sustainability manager at Argos, for a very long time, and I know that this company holds sustainability in high regard. That was a very important reason for choosing Argos. Sustainability is supported by the entire organization, and that really made the difference. At Argos, they truly match their actions with their words and are committed to sustainability in the long term."
Changing Market
Bernard van der Valk, commercial manager at Argos, is also looking forward to the collaboration: "We want to promote developments in the field of sustainability and increase market uptake to address our customers' challenges. We are convinced that, with this program that we are starting in collaboration with Bio4Pack, we are taking a great step forward. The market is changing, and we want to participate in this change and lead the way."Miquel agrees: "The new European Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation legislation is causing changes in the market for packaging and protective materials. We expect the market for these products based on renewable resources to grow even further in the coming years. We not only want to respond to market demand but also actively bring these sustainable solutions to our customers. This packaging line is not only fully aligned with the PPWR legislation, but the product also plays a role in the social sphere, making the Paddy Straw trays truly unique. We need to expand the market for this product, and in this, we have truly found each other."
Together at Fruit Logistica and Biofach
At the Fruit Logistica, the range of Bio4Pack will be presented at the Argos booth (hall 3.2, booth B14) and a week later a representation from Argos will go to the Biofach. Patrick: "There, the director-owner of our production company will also be present. And later this year, a visit to Malaysia is planned, where a delegation from Argos can see both the production and the cooperative from which we buy the rice straw."Bernard concludes: "There is a mutual commitment to doing this together. That motivates a seller. There's also a level of flexibility from Bio4Pack and the manufacturer regarding newly developed products. We will approach the market with a standard range, but if a client-specific size or item emerges, we don't have to shy away from it. That flexibility and expertise is there."
Argos Packaging is at the Fruit Logistica in hall 3.2, booth B14. Bio4Pack can be found at the Biofach in hall 5, booth 111.
