Collaboration: Ulamo chooses Argos as a sustainable partner

Ulamo Coatings has chosen Argos as a total supplier for its sustainable packaging for many years

As a specialist in coating and powder coating, Ulamo is constantly developing in various areas. When it comes to sustainability, Head of Purchasing Nico Hattink has set clear objectives for himself. “In addition to the goals we have set as an organisation, my personal goal is to make all my packaging more sustainable. I strive to have all packaging produced from recycled material or have it be easily recyclable by our customers. The waste stream for our packaging must be clear to customers so that the recycling process runs smoothly.”

Nico got in touch with Argos at the end of 2017 and the first packaging optimisation wishes were discussed. Ulamo has quality as its guiding principle and in everything they do, they focus on quality. Similarly, they focus on their packaging to guarantee quality during storage and transport. Guaranteeing quality, sustainable packaging and reducing the number of packaging suppliers to one reliable partner have been the most important starting points for the cooperation between Ulamo and Argos. “The partnership with Argos has become tight in recent years and together with product specialist Bas Riekert we come up with the right solutions to optimise the supply chain and achieve my objectives".

Quality and environmentally friendly packaging

To guarantee the quality of the products, choosing the right packaging is essential. Most breakage and/or damage occurs during storage and transport and you cannot always control this. At Ulamo, they use plastics, foam, spunbond and various other types of cardboard to protect the products, and it is up to Bas to replace these products with eco-friendly and sustainable alternatives. “If we really want to make a difference, we need to develop new innovative packaging that is good for the environment and easy to process in the recycling process”, said Nico.

In order to properly pack Ulamo products and to prevent damage during storage and transport, product specialist Bas has developed a unique product especially for Ulamo in which corrugated cardboard on a roll is fitted with a soft tissue paper. “The packaging is produced from sustainable FSC cardboard and provides extra protection with the soft tissue layer. As a result, the products are extra protected and the tissue paper prevents damage. Because the product consists entirely of paper, it is easy to recycle and ties in perfectly with Ulamo's sustainable objectives”, says Bas.
