Expert Tips: Here's how to keep pallet shipments in top condition during storage and transportation

14 augustus 2023

Every day, millions of pallet shipments of goods take place around the world. To ensure that these goods remain safe during storage and transport and are delivered in optimum condition, it is crucial that pallets are loaded, packed properly.

As experts in packaging and protection, we understand better than anyone how essential it is to handle pallets correctly. Nevertheless, each specific product or packaging combination requires a customized protection approach. Here are some valuable tips from product specialist Bas Riekert for properly packing and protecting pallets regardless of the type of products.

A pallet provides the right foundation

Selecting the right pallet with the right dimensions and carrying capacity for your shipment is a basic step. There are several types of pallets, each designed for specific applications. The most traditional and widespread pallet is the wooden pallet. Available in a variety of sizes and carrying capacities. They are durable and can be used frequently and eventually recycled. We also see an increasing demand for plastic pallets, among other things, which are often lighter, more hygienic and also resistant to moisture, chemicals and splinters. Cardboard pallets are often used for lighter loads and one-time shipments.

Combining protective materials ensures best protection

Damage and breakage are well-known challenges in the logistics chain. To ensure product quality, it is important to influence every aspect of the process. When this is not possible, proper product protection becomes all the more important. In addition to careful pallet stacking, with heavier items placed at the bottom to reduce the risk of damage and instability, the use of various protective materials is crucial to minimize shock, friction and other damage.

Edge protectors

Our high-quality edge protectors offer extra protection during storage and transport, making your products more resistant to impacts, shocks and instability. By providing all corners of the pallet with corner profiles in combination with strapping bands or wrapping film, you significantly reduce the risk of breakage, damage or loss.

Strapping and wrapping film

Strapping prevents gaps between goods, which prevents shifting and prevents damage. Polyester (PET) strapping is suitable for heavy loads, while polypropylene (PP) strapping is ideal for lighter loads. Wrapping film is an excellent way to wrap products quickly and efficiently, providing stability and protection. This transparent film prevents dust, dirt and moisture and retains visibility after wrapping.

In addition to these indispensable materials, air cushion film, foam sheets, anti-slip mats and insulating materials, among others, can also help thoroughly protect your shipment. A well-protected pallet shipment requires a combination of materials for optimal results. In optimally protecting pallet shipments, one product cannot do without the other and together they provide the best protection.
