4 steps to optimize your packaging process

09 augustus 2023

An efficient packaging process is essential for organizations that produce, package or ship goods. Optimizing this process can lead to lower costs, reduced packaging and space waste and increased customer satisfaction. But how do you ensure that the packaging process is as optimal as possible? Our specialists in the Industry and Retail department deal with this issue on a daily basis and have broad knowledge of the various packaging processes. Together with our experts Germandio, Bas and Dennis, we have developed a simple step-by-step plan to simplify this process:

  1. Analyze the current process
Before changing or improving the packaging process, it is important to thoroughly analyze the current process. We discuss bottlenecks and inefficient steps with the packaging team and observe their work. We evaluate what packaging is currently used, whether the supply is sufficient and whether there are opportunities to simplify. Bas emphasizes, "It is important to understand why the process is currently carried out in a certain way, as there may have been valid reasons for that choice at the time."

  2. Optimization of the assortment
Based on the information gathered, we look at the current packaging assortment. Germandio notes, "In some warehouses, for example, you see six different sizes of boxes, while this can easily be reduced to fewer sizes or multifunctional packaging that can be used in several different ways. Standardization creates clarity and speeds up the packing process, which is beneficial both financially and in terms of space.

  3. Sampling, test phase and implementation
With the new packaging plan in mind, our design studio gets to work designing and developing the new packaging. After consultation with the customer, samples are made and testing of the packaging begins. Only after approval does the packaging go into production. Once the packaging is produced, we make sure that the transition to the new packaging is smooth in the upcoming period. Any adjustments to the packaging process can be made during this period. It is vital that employees are aware of the changes and know what is expected of them when receiving and using the new packaging.

  4. Monitoring and evaluation
To ensure that the packaging process continues to run smoothly, we constantly keep our finger on the pulse. We stay in contact with the customer and evaluate the process after a few weeks. Dennis adds, "I regularly go into the warehouse to inquire how the employees experience the optimization. This keeps us involved in the process and allows me to resolve any obstacles quickly." In addition, it is wise to gauge what recipients think of the optimization as well.
The packaging process is one that needs constant attention and can be optimized where necessary. In fact, factors can be adjusted regularly that call for changes in the process. Various factors can in fact be changed on a regular basis, leading to required changes within the process. These include changes in assortment, new options in packaging and protection, as well as changes in the needs of the organization and recipients. All of these factors can affect the course of the packaging process.
